Why Do We Need Sleep?

There are many reasons why you shouldn't follow Randy Gardner's example, who officially stayed awake for 11 days straight. Apart from all the health-related concerns, here's what you should know: there was another man who stayed awake for 19 days, beating the 11-day sleeplessness record. However, they stopped recording such attempts because they posed dangerous health risks. Consequently, these competitions have ended. So don't attempt any such madness and continue sleeping. Besides, you can find healthier ways to make your mark in history.

1. Body Restoration During Sleep

Some second chances leave the giver regretful. This time, you won't waste one of those opportunities. You'll use sleep – a true second chance for your health – to restore your body. In other words: restoration time!

Restoration is simply renewing what's old. This renewal cycle is more necessary in babies and children, but it's only possible through sleep. Sleep enables the recovery of energy and other elements lost in the body throughout the day. Additionally, with the natural secretion of the melatonin hormone found in the body, sleep plays the most effective role in cellular and bodily self-renewal. Not getting enough sleep in response to excessive daily hustle creates an unbalanced match – like ordering a diet cola with a large pizza.

2. Better Than the Beauty Who Sleeps Standing Up

Whether you're sleeping beauty or just beautiful, never be one of those who sleep standing up. Sleep has significant effects on learning, application, and memory. When sleep is compromised or insufficient, it reflects on our daily activities. In situations requiring high safety standards, these reflections can create serious dangers. From a memory perspective, insufficient sleep results in forgetfulness. Yes, perhaps forgetting that embarrassing moment when you fell in front of everyone might be nice, but your Instagram password might slip away too. The "sleeping standing up" we mentioned above is actually a person's inability to fully focus on tasks that require their attention. It's like searching everywhere for your phone when it's been in your hand all along.

3. Where Sleep Doesn't Enter, Doctors Do

We have bad news for those who don't learn from houses where sunlight doesn't enter: doctors have also started working overtime in homes where sleep doesn't enter. As the winter months approach – when we're at war with illness-causing viruses – we need to understand the priority of sleep as a kind of preparation. Because sleep, which means protecting and nurturing the body rather than just sleeping and waking up, provides great support during illness seasons. When you don't maintain a sleep routine and don't get the necessary sleep, it harms your system. Sleep deprivation weakens the immune system. A weakened system cannot respond powerfully to diseases. At this point, chicken soup won't serve as much of an alternative to sleep. Yes, the same applies to herbal teas.

4. Stay Young Through Sleep

For those who don't read beyond "health" and say "Oh well, it's only a three-day world" – did you know that beauty sleep is real?

Sleep, with all its contributing factors, provides visible renewal alongside internal repair. In addition to the routines you apply to stay young, you can achieve positive effects by regulating your sleep. Of course, this is a long-term arrangement. What I'm saying is: sleep well – really well – to avoid being categorized as "auntie" or "uncle" the moment you turn 35.

5. Don't Become Someone Sleepless and Cranky

When we can't get the sleep we need, we transform into uncles who puncture children's balls, neighbor ladies who appear at the door the moment they hear music, and shopkeepers who don't respond to customers saying "take it easy." Continuing to live without realizing how important sleep is for our lifestyle gradually increases the volume of depression songs playing in the background. A person who wakes up without getting enough sleep is an irritable person. Setting aside all matters related to physical health and such, a person struggling with the constant stress of daily life cannot complete their mental health without sleeping enough. Naturally, this nerve and stress battle damages both healthy mental state and relationships. We know that guy who causes a scene at brunch because there's no apricot jam – you're like this because you didn't get your sleep.
